Colleges & Universities
The Detroit Cultural Center is home to Wayne State University, the College for Creative Studies, and the University of Michigan Detroit Center — making it one of the most educationally concentrated districts in the state. For students, that means world-class museums, live performances, and cultural programming are just steps from campus. Many Cultural Center institutions also offer discounted or free admission to college students, making arts and culture an accessible part of everyday campus life.
College for Creative Studies
Recently named a 2025 Opportunity School by the Carnegie Classification, the College for Creative Studies is known as one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, and their graduates continue to help define and grow diverse industries including transportation, fashion, studio arts, entertainment and film, product, and many more.
University of Michigan
With deep ties to Detroit throughout its history, the University of Michigan has led more than 400 programs and initiatives with communities and residents across the city through its Detroit Center, located just down Woodward Avenue from the district. The Center serves as a hub for higher education and cultural exchange, hosting programs and events that foster meaningful connections between the university, its students, and Detroit.
Wayne State University
Wayne State University’s walkable, architecturally rich urban campus is integrated into the fabric of the Detroit Cultural Center. Michigan’s only urban R1 research university, Wayne State is also a major contributor to the district’s arts and cultural life, with standout programs in music, dance, and the visual arts, along with specialized offerings like art therapy and museum practice.

Each September, we also invite educators from across Metro Detroit to the Cultural Center for Educators Night — a free annual open house and resource fair. Hundreds of teachers, administrators, and education professionals come together to explore the museums, universities, and community organizations that make up the district, and to connect with field trip opportunities, classroom resources, and educational partnerships available throughout the Cultural Center.
